Campaigns for Consideration

  • Urban Garbage - There are many instances of where trash accumulates in various settings where we live. For instance, if one does a walk through Westwood, we see trash on the sides of streets, in grassy areas, etc.. If this was documented (photo, location), then the information can be sent to local authorities so the proper measures can be taken. Also, the general community will be aware of this problem.
  • Homeless Population - Count of homeless people and location. With this, the proper resources can be built in a particular location. Examples of concentrated homeless areas include Westwood Villages and Santa Monica Beach area.
  • Packet Sensing - Not sure if this campaign would be relevant to our research, but no one answered my email question about campaigns... Basically, the idea is that instead of sensing data that's already out there, we have the phones emit network "packets" to be sensed by other phones. These packets can contain any data such as text that might be tagged with GPS or other useful info. Here are some possible applications:
    • Automated Surveys - Companies spend money and time to gather surveys about who uses their products. This can become automated through the power of sensor networks and "participatory sensing". The companies can have all their products which have network connection (WiFi, GPRS, etc.) periodically send out special packets that identify the product such as "Nokia M80" and that are tagged with GPS info. Then they have an application for the phone that end-users can download if they want to participate in the product survey data gathering (possibly with incentives offered by the company). This application will gather these "survey packets" that are emitted by products surrounding the end-user and send them to the company. This data is valuable because it is GPS tagged so companies can observe trends in products (i.e. Los Angeles, CA seems to have many Nokia M80 users).
    • Social Interaction - We may visit many places everyday and pass by many different people. For most people there is little interaction with the majority of people they pass by, when actually they might have many things in common (i.e. work at same company, like sports, etc.). Using this packet sensing idea, people can choose to participate in common interest rendezvous by emitting text packets from their cell phone containing data such as "football fan". As they walk around, others can use their phones to sense these packets and realize that someone in their near vicinity is a "football fan". This could potentially be a new way to meet interesting people that share the same interests.
